Biography
Gerard Arthur Way was born on April 9th, 1977 in Summit, New Jersey. His parents are Donald and Donna Lee Way, and he is the elder brother to Mikey Way, the bassist for My Chemical Romance. He first began singing and performing when he was cast as Peter Pan in a fourth-grade production of the play by the same name. His maternal grandmother, Elena Lee Rush, was a major influence in his life, sewing his Peter Pan costume and later buying My Chemical Romance's first tour bus. He attended Belleville High School and graduated in 1995 and later attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City, graduating in 1999 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.
Gerard started My Chemical Romance in late 2001 alongside Ray Toro and the band's ex-drummer after the September 11th tragedy occured. As he told Spin magazine: "I literally said to myself, 'Fuck art. I’ve gotta get out of the basement. I’ve gotta see the world. I’ve gotta make a difference!'"
In addition to singing for My Chemical Romance, Gerard is also an artist and writer. He created a cartoon called The Breakfast Monkey in early 2001, which was nearly picked up by The Cartoon Network, but was ultimately turned down as it was too similar to the already-existing cartoon Aqua Teen Hunger Force. More recently, Gerard has authored a comic book series that is growing in popularity - The Umbrella Academy.
On September 3rd, 2007, Gerard married Mindless Self Indulgence's bassist Lyn-Z. He has stated in several interviews since then that "Married life fucking rocks!" Gerard's representitave has confirmed this.
